storage jar labels

project number one from the homemade home...

Materials and Equipment

Air hardening white modeling clay

Pastry board and rolling pin

Plastic wrap

Laces, leaves or buttons (optional)

Acrylic paint (optional)

Sharp knife and cookie cutters

Skewer or tapestry needle

Plastic bag

Fine sandpaper

Ribbon and twine

Pencil

1. I began by rolling out the entire piece of clay until it was about half an inch thick.

2. If you would like to add texture to the clay, now is the time to do so. Simply lay the impressionable item on top of the clay and roll with rolling pin until texture is imprinted on the clay.

3. Using cookie cutters or your sharp knife, cut clay into squares, rectangles or circles.

4. While the clay is still wet, use a skewer or tapestry needle to make a hole at the top, all the way though the clay. Make sure that the hole is large enough  to thread ribbon or twine though.

5.  Carefully peel the shapes off of the pastry board and place them onto a smoothed out plastic bag to dry. Periodically flip the clay to ensure even drying.

6.  Once the clay is dry, use  a fine sandpaper to rub away the rough edges.

7.  Thread a piece or ribbon on twine through the holes.

8.  Write or draw on the labels to indicate the contents of the jars.

I thought that it would be really neat to make some gift tags and labels to give as gifts as well...

(the doily texture is by far my most favorite.)

Although, the button impression is pretty darn cute too.

P.S. I will not be working through the book from beginning to end. 

Instead , I will be working in, out and all around the contents of the book, until I complete each of the 

books 50 projects.
